An occasional series of interviews with some of my favourite Lego builders.
This time, the incredible Duplo artist Rémy Delapierre:
- You’re a grown-up for goodness sake, what are you still doing playing with Lego?
Excellent question, because I am even worse than any other lego grown-up player: I play only with Lego Duplo, which are meant for 5 yo maximum kids. Am I still a good citizen? 😉
I play Lego because of the pandemics lockdown, otherwise maybe I would never have played Lego. By building monuments and exotic animals, I travel without moving and that’s fun. Find me at https://www.instagram.com/lego_odyssey/
- When you’re not playing with children’s toys, what do you enjoy doing?
I’m a tourist guide in Paris area, and I run marathon. But same problem as above : no job during lockdown => Lego.
- What is your favourite song?
Acid Eiffel from Laurent Garnier, sad, long and electro.
- What is your favourite film?
The Thin Red Line, from Terrence Mallick,
for the beauty, slowness, emptiness, violence and foolishness of war.
- What is your favourite TV show?
I don’t watch much TV. Maybe cartoons with my son.
- What is your favourite book?
Spring snow from yukio Mishima. Beautiful writing, beautiful love story, unreal world.
- What was your first Lego set?
When I was a child, I had a few pieces and a plate at home, but no complete set. So I never followed a plan. My son received 10863 set with animals train, so maybe this is the first set I got.
- What is your happiest Lego-related memory?
When I first got interviewed by French newspaper after building the Douaumont Ossuary. I would never think that this would interest anyone, but finally I became a buzz. Such a nice surprise!
- What has been your biggest Lego-related disappointment?
I built the LOVE artistic letters from Robert Indiana and it collapsed before I took a picture. It happened late at night and this was a real disappointment.
- What is your biggest Lego-related ambition?
Make my son to love Lego, which is not obvious because sometimes I ask him not to touch what I do, so I fear he has a fearful relation with Lego.
- What would be your ideal Lego-related job?
I prefer it keeps being a hobby, not something linked with money.
- What is your favourite brick?
20 dots long brick. It’s very strong and makes easy to build anything with it.
- What is your favourite Lego set that you have?
10885, my first fun puzzle. Because the bricks are unique and large, with beautiful colors.
- Which Lego set do you most crave?
It can only be a Duplo set 😂. Maybe 10885 or 10925 for the colors.
- What should be the next big Lego theme?
Something linked with sport.
- Which of your MOCs are you most proud of
The Venus of Milo, which is the first MOC I sold and delivered. Something I would never think be possible few time ago.
- What are you going to build next?
Not sure already, it will be decided last minute, depending my mood.
- Who (apart from me) is your favourite Lego builder?
Maybe harutakatsugu for the colors.
- What should I build next?
An emperor tamarin.
[Wow! I’ve never seen one of those before. I’ll see what I can do . . . .]
